New Sooners DC says turnaround underway

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma bolstered its reputation as an attractive destination for offensive talent when former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts transferred there last week.

The Sooners believe they must become a preferred landing spot for top defensive talent, too, if they hope to break through and challenge Alabama and Clemson for national supremacy.

That's one of the top priorities for new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, who was introduced to the media on Sunday. He said Oklahoma had already gotten things started before he arrived with a 2019 recruiting class that includes six four-star signees, according to 247Sports.


Rutgers names Terps' Buh to run defense

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) Rutgers has named Maryland's Andy Buh its defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Coach Chris Ash announced the hiring Monday. Buh, who spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Maryland, replaces Jay Niemann. Niemann had been the Scarlet Knights' defensive coordinator since Ash took over the program three years ago.


Indiana hires veteran assistant as OC

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) The Indiana Hoosiers have hired longtime play-caller Kalen DeBoer as their associate head coach and offensive coordinator.

Coach Tom Allen made the announcement Monday. DeBoer replaces Mike DeBord, who retired in late December.


Florida hires ex-NFL assistant Gray

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Florida has hired Torrian Gray as its cornerbacks coach, bringing him back to Gainesville to replace Charlton Warren.

Warren left the Gators to take a similar position at rival Georgia.


Duke hires Taylor to coach WRs

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Duke has hired Trooper Taylor to coach its wide receivers.

Coach David Cutcliffe announced the hiring Sunday night. Cutcliffe and Taylor worked together on the Tennessee staff in 2006 and '07.


NC State adds ex-Marshall asst. to staff

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolina State has added Marshall assistant Todd Goebbel to its coaching staff.

Coach Dave Doeren on Sunday said Goebbel will be the Wolfpack's tight ends coach and special teams coordinator.


Tee Martin returns to Vols as assistant

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Two decades after playing quarterback on Tennessee's last national championship team, Tee Martin is returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach.

Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt announced Saturday that Martin has joined his staff. Martin's specific title and duties haven't been announced yet.


Rypien, Stick throw TDs in Shrine Game

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Brett Rypien displayed some of his pedigree in the East-West Shrine Game.

Rypien and Easton Stick each threw a touchdown pass to help the West beat the East 21-17 on Saturday.


Ex-Utah State LB found guilty of rape

BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (AP) A jury Friday found a former Utah State University football player guilty of sexually assaulting six women while he was in college.

The jury convicted 25-year-old Torrey Green of five counts of rape, one charge of object rape, a count of forcible sexual abuse and one charge of misdemeanor sexual battery, the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News reported.


Georgia adds ex-Florida DBs coach

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Georgia coach Kirby Smart has hired Charlton Warren from Florida as defensive backs coach.

Warren spent the 2018 season as Florida's cornerbacks coach after coaching defensive backs and special teams at Tennessee in 2017.
